40th and 30th Anniversaries
For their 40th-anniversary symposium, the Afghanistan Perceivers and visitors from North Texas's Crew of the Barque Lone Star met on 20 Sept. 2014 at the University of Tulsa's Allen Chapman Student Union to hear celebrated Sherlockian Les Klinger, TU professor Joseph Kestner (now deceased) and Dean Clark discuss Sherlock Holmes, Victorian male obligations, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and the naming of Holmes Peak. Brian Wilson served as master of ceremonies.
The group retired to the Faculty Dining Room for conversation, cocktails and a sit-down dinner. Afterward, entertainment was provided by professional actors performing radio plays by Dean Clark, Steve Mason and Gayle Lange Puhl. Many guests were dressed in stunning Victorian and Steam Punk costumes. The evening ended with a carouse by the Companions of Sir Hugo at an undisclosed location, where Klinger entertained the group with his exploits as technical advisor on Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes films and other stories. In 2004, the Perceivers celebrated their 30th anniversary at the Green Onion (while long a Tulsa favorite, sadly now defunct), where Clark was the master of ceremonies. The evening included a performance of William Gillette's short parody, The Painful Predicament of Sherlock Holmes. |
